Alex Sala is an Adelaide Hills-based artist with a multifaceted formation as an architect, architectural illustrator, and educator. His training and practice include over 40 years of experience in architectural illustration and photography. Architecture representation, having my passion in the mid-70s. I enjoy representing architecture, urban spaces, and scenes of daily life through sketches, paintings, and a variety of representational techniques. A distinctive figurative language grew from a deeply personal journey rooted in a lifelong devotion to visual representation — my passion spanning architecture, drawing, and painting since the late 1970s. Alex's work is known for his photorealistic perspectives and building illustrations from the 1970s to the 1980s, particularly his meticulous architectural drawings. Alex has been profoundly shaped by the work of Helmut Jacoby and the hyperrealist movement. His visual language reflects a wide versatility in technique and style, growing over time, working across fountain pen, graphite, watercolour, acrylic, tempera, airbrush, and mixed media on paper. His practice is grounded in the expressive power of representation, where drawing, painting, photography, and architecture converge as parallel and complementary modes of artistic inquiry. His work embraces a wide range of themes — from architecture and landscape to the figurative representation of everyday life. After more than four decades of practice, “I feel that my journey has only just begun. I look forward to new discoveries and challenges, while continuing to find joy in drawing.” His work embraces a wide range of themes — from architecture and landscape to the figurative representation of everyday life. Over the past forty years, I feel that my journey has only just begun, and I look forward to the road ahead of new discoveries and challenges, while continuing to enjoy drawing.
