ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is an oil painting on gessoed arches 300 lb water color. It is framed and ready to hang. The painting's use of pink is influenced by DeKooning although the subject matter suggests a landscape. This is one of the covid 19 pandemic works. I could not use my normal large studio. I was working in my home studio that had beautiful light and was small. I had stacks of 140 and 300 lb arches watercolor paper 15-20 years old. I had not canvas or linen nor room to stretch canvas. So I began to apply double layers of gesso the water color paper and tack it to my studio wall. I was working intuitively, knowing only this was a deeply frightening time. Using oil and other materials on the paper. I was channeling the existential reality that we all were experiencing due to the pandemic. I was sheltering in place and had ample time to be in the studio. I suppose if there is any art historical reference in this piece, it would be Twombly. His loopy marks that are a language, but not one we know. I think the seeming ease and randomness of his mark making influenced this work. hope the viewer is interested in the forms and colors and over all composition of this piece. But more then anything I hope the viewer perceives a moment of beauty and hope that transcend the difficulties of our age. This painting was influenced by the uncertainty of the moment and the sense of having no idea what dangers we were facing.
