ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A stratocumulus cloud belongs to a genus-type of clouds characterized by large dark, rounded masses, usually in groups, lines, or waves, and the whole being at a lower altitude, usually below 2,400 meters (8,000 ft). Since the existence of homo sapiens on earth the heavens and clouds represented the infinite and the end. All societies associate the heavens to the abodes of the gods - Olympus to the Greeks, the Valhalla for the Nordic people - or the celestial paradise where among the clouds were wonderful landscapes that await humans after his departure from his earthly life. The clouds always aroused admiration and mystery and was the subject of profound observation and devotion.

CERQUEIRA DE SOUSA, Maria Jose, was born in Lisbon in 1956 and graduated in Fine Arts - Painting from College of Fine Arts of Lisbon (ESBAL) in 1979. She began her professional life as Professor of Painting and Drawing at in schools, public and private and has participated in several Painting Exhibition, collective and individual. Her vast work, produced over more than 35 years of work, is spread out for numerous private collections in Portugal, Spain and Austria. Analysis to the "CERQUEIRA DE SOUSA" painting for Fernando Manuel Raposo (Director of the School of Applied Arts of Catelo Branco): « The painting of "CERQUEIRA DE SOUSA" is mostly an evocative painting of places. It offers us, a closer revisitation of spaces that are familiar to us, purging of the formal elements of everything which may disturb the viewer's attention. Opting in stylistic terms, for the geometrization of forms and taking advantage of flat colors, reminding us here painters like Maluda, Molina, Bravo da Mata , etc. . , "Cerqueira de Sousa", in a plastic appreciation of the work process, explores with great subtlety the effect of light and shade and let the colors of a bright light ''overflow'' beyond the limits of the screen and offers us a serene contemplation. In the words of Mario Dionisio, essayist and critic of art, referring to Paul Klee: '' the condition of the artist is comparable to the trunk of a tree. Apprehend all the real and feeds from it, as the tree does through the roots.'' For this purpose is "CERQUEIRA DE SOUSA", who while impersonating the real awakens us, to awareness and proposes a more careful consideration of the spaces and places we inhabit.» #!sobre/cjg9 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH8Vv1KQnlw
