About The Artwork

With this exhibition the artist launches an investigation into the absence rather than the presence. The artist is absent at the unveiling of a new body of work. The absence of a definitive description of the exhibition. The eloquence of absence and the depiction of nowhere in particular. The romantically sublime takes a holiday. ‘My fear’, Anselm Kiefer once wrote, ‘is that the beauty art produces will dissolve into ashes when it is brought to the level of speech’.

Working mostly in oils with technical finesse and intimate focus, the South African born (1976) artist’s muse lies firmly with the landscape. The true edge in his work lies not in the mountains and skies, but rather in the mind-set of the viewer. Bisschoff also does work in printmaking, animation and sculpture. The artist constantly innovates and applies new ideas, which can be seen in his use of found objects, painted glass and Plexiglas elements in his work. Mixing a wry sense of humour and irony into the work can be clearly seen as comments on modern culture and life in general. A whole ‘library’ was created using found book covers, making up an award winning exhibition. Animations were projected onto paintings, thus rendering them ‘live’. Mixing sculpture and painting on exhibition and working with other artists often happens. Branching out into sculpture has won him several awards in South Africa. Working with public spaces also proved to be fruitful, especially in the painting installation ‘Migration’, commissioned by the Taichung cultural government in Taiwan. The artist currently lives and works in Malmö, Sweden.
