About The Artwork

Oil and charcoal on African fabric stretched over a wooden box frame. Framed in handpainted matte black wooden tray frame. My aim with each painting is to create a space that is both calming and arresting. A porthole into your imagination. This painting uses African fabric as a base, which you can see as the plant pot. I love playing with pink and red together. Using layers of cool and warm shades, a huge contrast can be achieved. I've played with the pattern of the plant pot by emphasising the swaying of the plant leaves - they're almost mirroring eachother. The plant lives in my studio and I've painted it countless times. It's a very plant-like plant - simple leaves that can tell a different story each time.

NICOLA WILTSHIRE (b.1987 UK) completed her BA at University of Westminster, London (2009) and her MFA at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee (2015). Nicola observes the world through her paintings; using colour and shape to evoke the feeling of a place, person or experience. Images of walks and domestic interiors are amongst the themes used to create a quiet and uplifting space. Each painting begins with patterned fabric stretched over a wooden frame. Nicola draws in charcoal and makes her own oil paint using centuries-old techniques. The work is the result of an enchantment with colour, texture, materials and pattern, plus a celebration of art’s history.
