ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Sunflowers for a Season" is a captivating still life oil painting that expresses the organic richness in a bouquet of chocolate brown sunflowers. The bouquet incorporates touches of tradition with a few golden yellow sunflowers in the mix to compliment the warm brown tones. A shapely elongated orange vase extends the seasonal palette and vertical energy of the painting. The colors are exciting and unexpected. A soothing array of warm earthy hues are pared with clear saturated shades of turquoise, violet, off white and a splash of brilliant yellow in a lemon. There is an architectural aspect to the artwork with its simple lines, attention to form and subtle geometric influences. Inspiration for the painting was my experience with feeling wonder in seeing the chocolate brown sunflowers. A friend brought them to my studio and I couldn't recall ever seeing sunflowers in quite this palette. I wanted to create a visual experience through the canvas that celebrated their beauty, freshness and distinctive character. This was painted on a stretched canvas and is a signed original.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
