Sunrise – Mather Point, Grand Canyon Painting

At any time of the day, it is difficult to grasp the sheer scale of the Grand Canyon. But nothing surpasses the sight of the sun rising over the rim of the Canyon. We rose at 5.30am and disturbed grazing deer on the way to the observation area at Mather Point on the South Rim. At that time of day we were not sure how many people wold be there. The answer was lots. All quietly waiting as the sky began to blush with the orange/red glow of the sun below the horizon. Time seemed to stand still as the light gradually grew, then suddenly the first rays topped the distant hills and we were all bathed in the warm glow of the first rays. Below, the Canyon was still inky black, but as the sun hauled itself over the horizon the shadows gradually lost their intensity and more details of the Canyon below began to appear. The spell lasted maybe half an hour as dawn turned into day. Then people reluctantly began to leave having shared a unique moment with everyone else there. Strange to think that nature has been putting on the same show every dawn when the weather permits, for millions of years.
