ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This landscape painting shows a winter sunset I saw in Clansayes, a small village in Drôme Provençale. The sky started to fill with burning gold and deep purple. The gold looked like paint applied diagonally with a broad sweep across the violet clouds. The distant powder blue hills played off against the gold to create a gentle pulse. Colour rose in a crescendo and gradually faded. Can you feel the magic of that fleeting moment? This painting was chosen to feature on the book cover of a famous German writer. Please note: This 19.8″ x 19.8 x 1.75″ oil on canvas ready to hang. Framing is not required. All my paintings are varnished to add a protective coat against dust. Only the highest quality archival fine art grade oil paint is used on the surface gessoed and prepared by myself. Packing: All work is packed professionally using protective compressed foam boards 2 cm deep so that your painting arrives safely.

Wandering through the landscape we're touched by its mood and light, we live in it, and it lives in us. This magical union is where my paintings are born. How can I make tangible on a paint surface a world that is full of magic and poetry? My finished pieces do not mirror a subject matter but are a representation of emotions felt in a specific time or place. Often the fleeting effect of a particular light and colour in nature are held somewhere in my visual memory. At some point, this takes centre stage on the painting I am working on. It may appear during the process of creation without an obvious connection to the subject matter at hand and yet, it adds another dimension, a particular atmosphere. These processes are ways and means by which I express my connection to nature in all its richness and variety. I am an Irish artist living and working in Provence France My work is rooted in the Romantic landscape tradition. I hold a Bachelor Degree in Fine Art (BFA). My work is in collections in France, the USA, Great Britain and Ireland.
