Wood, 98.5 x 122.5 cm

Botanical studies of Snake's Head, in latin Fritillaria Meleagris. 'Fritillus' meas 'dice-box', possibly referring to the chequered pattern on the flowers.
'Meleagris' means 'spotted like a guineafowl'. The common name, which is 'Snake's Head' refers to the snakelike appearance of the nodding flower heads on long stems. Vita Sackville-West called it "a sinister little flower, in the mournful colour of decay".
