ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Traditional seascape incorporating meticulous detail depicting a yacht design typical of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From the mid 19th century and the introduction of the America´s Cup yacht design was based on the speed and handling of fast commercial schooners and the nimble pilot boats used on the US Eastern Seaboard ports. This is typical of my traditional style of painting and historical marine subject matter is never far away. I won the Oil Painting Prize at the Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition, London 2023. Much of the painted surface is fairly smooth although the movement of the water has some texture. The painting is supplied in a contemporary white painted wood frame with a natural wood surround. Corded and ready to hang.

I have long been fascinated with painting water and nudes in water. I find the reflective properties, the movement and the distorting qualities of water provide me with a wealth of challenges. I find that although my aim is always to produce a high degree of realism in my paintings I am constantly using sequences of abstract shapes to achieve an effect. "Peter's work has been seen around the world. In his paintings reflections of both classical and modern interpretations can be found. With superb and interesting techniques he infuses a harmony between natural realism and the painted surface creating subtle yet dramatic imagery. Influences can be identified from many periods of art history. In particular the realism of the late nineteenth century and the photo-realism of the twentieth century."
