About The Artwork

'Talking Heads' is a colorful remake of my gloomy series 'Deutsche Geschichte' from 1981 (six paintings of people with empty heads, made with wash chalk and acrylic paint). In the eighties I often visited West Berlin and my impression of German people was one of emptiness and little perspective. For this work I was also inspired by the American artist Edward Kienholz. This expressive colorful painting (Talking Heads 01 in ocher and black) of a man with a red tie and red glasses and his woman watching 'something', want to tell you that since the fall of the wall in 1989, the Berlin people are happy again and with a lot of perspective. One day I visited an exhibition in an empty villa in West Berlin. In one of the many large rooms was a long oval table with overturned wine glasses, half-empty bottles, dirty plates, dishes with leftovers and crumpled napkins. A tea towel with blood and a large knife with blood on it lay on the floor next to a fallen chair. I was all alone in that room. It was very quiet and you apparently had to imagine what had happened. A bacchanal? Did the guests get into an argument? Was there a murder? And had everyone left in haste? Yes, it was a very special experience! I made this painting on high-quality paper with acrylic paint and light-resistant wax crayons. My works are in numerous collections, including those of the Municipal Museum in Amsterdam.
