Driving north to pick up some picture-framing equipment, we did what we'd been promising ourselves we'd do for years. We meandered. We took scenic back roads. We stopped and looked at things. It was a good decision, because on the way back, the weather had closed in and you could see damn-all. In the photo I used as the basis for this picture, the snowy heights looked completely featureless, so to prevent the mountains from looking flat, I invented some shadows. If they're inaccurate, I apologise. But the solution is in your own hands. Get out the Vivid markers, and ink in the correct shadows on your screen. In fact, you can do that with any of my paintings that you feel need improvement.

Paul Lyons is a New Zealand artist working in watercolour.
He uses a variety of techniques to achieve the unusually rich, dark colours and textures that characterise many of his watercolours, and his paintings often include layers of collaged Japanese rice paper or gouache.
He has exhibited in various galleries, including the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and his paintings hang in collections throughout New Zealand and in America and Britain.
The paintings are all watercolours executed with archival-quality materials (100% rag paper and paints with a lightfastness rating of A or AA).
