Art Description

Painting: Oil on Canvas.

I'm often asked where my fascination with butterflies began. There are only so many childhood memories your brain stores, some are vivid indeed colourful and others are darker and stay in your memory for this very reason. When I was seven I had a neighbour who used to come and play with me.

My mum had a garden plant that attracted numerous angelic butterflies and Lauren was particularly drawn to them. In her tiny hands she cupped the butterfly until it died and would then Sellotape them to inside a scrap book. At such a young age I didn’t know what to do but feeling compelled to stop this abhorrent act, I told Lauren that butterflies had hearts and souls and were really tiny little fairies before they became human fairies and if she killed one she would never be a fully grown human. I sometimes wonder what happened to Lauren....
