About The Artwork
This is a portrait of two children, a brother and sister. They confront the viewer with serious and self possessed expressions. They are innocent but not to be taken lightly. I depict children as individuals not as appendages of a mother or as part of a family unit. In this portrait I hope to capture the qualities of gravity, dignity and solemnity, aspects of a child’s demeanour that is often disregarded. I am interested in the gaze of the child, the subject confronting the viewer with a look that is direct and open and that captures the attention of the audience and elicits a response
