I am beguiled by the humble mark or line, its use as expression whether in words or form alone. It has always been a presence in my work. I love the energy of the simple stroke, how it can draw your eye from one place to another creating the experience of movement and energy. I use automatic marks that imply letters or words, purposefully veiling any written meaning in an effort to show how we attempt to verbally communicate our thoughts and ideas but are more often miss-understood or understood inaccurately. "The conversation" is a visual expression of many people speaking together at one time with their words overlapping and often transparent, not actually communicating yet connecting emotionally. One artist who has influenced this body of work is Cy Tombly. His free and open use of mark making suggests to me words or thoughts appearing to spill out over the surface of the paper or canvas in an unconsciously emotive way without actually saying anything but still communicating powerfully.

Karleen’s work is a continuation of her infatuation with line as a force and direction for movement as well as communication. The energy and expression in a simple line or stroke dynamically draws your eye from one place to another guiding the viewer to see it for its own beauty as it directs and manipulates the color and texture around it. In her most recent work she uses the automatic stroke or mark as a form of quasi literal communication which can neither be read nor understood.
