ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting is a tribute to The First Artists and their extraordinary legacy to the world. Far into prehistory, man was already sensitive to beauty. The Homo sapiens and his depictions of life was the first to introduce symbolic thinking and through its statues and cave paintings he was able to describe his story. For prehistorians, these animals adorning Lascaux from 17 000 were not randomly selected, they carried a powerful symbolism, now lost. The discovery of the Chauvet cave, where some frescoes were made more than 30 000 years, has shown that well before Lascaux, Homo sapiens mastered all aspects of figurative art. Lascaux is the setting of a complex of caves in southwestern France. The original caves are located near the village of Montignac in Dordogne. Discovered on December 18 1994, the Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave in the Ardèche of southern France, is considered to be one of the most significant prehistoric sites. The 'Venus of Willendorf' (22 000 to 24 000 BCE), is an 11 cm (4.3in) high statuette of a female figure excavated in Austria that was carved from an oolitic limestone and tinted with red ochre. The burial of Dolni Vestonice III, Moravia, Czech Republic (v.- 26 000), contains the body of a young woman in a contracted position. I love life and it inspires me to paint. I love people, observing them, discovering their unique personality. Nature represents an inexhaustible source of beauty. It's this outburst towards life that I try to represent in my paintings. My preferred subject material is painting the human body, daily life scenes and nature. I found all this and much more in my travels. The first time I visited Africa, I felt an irresistible attraction for the people, for their simple way of appreciating life, for their smiles, for their dignity, for their respect of nature. Each time I returned to Africa I was impressed with the strength of character of African people and their ability to provide their family with the basic needs. I have been painting the beauties of Africa through its people hoping to transmit a lasting emotion to the viewer by showing a different aspect of this continent. Through my medium of choice, oil on canvas, I challenge myself with the old-master's technique of realism painting and the application of creativity in contemporary art. My current artistic endeavour is to express emotion in a painting. The ability to portray an emotional feeling between the viewer and each of my paintings, is a continuous discovery. With my wife Agnes Jorgensen and an ongoing commitment to staying true to the soul of our art, we recently launched our Jorgensen Chatelain Collection with the objective to offer a positive view of our world, our history and our future. We both have participated in group exhibitions as well as a number of solo exhibitions. Our artworks are part of private collections throughout Canada, the United States and Europe. Together we have founded a non profit organization Painting a New World - Peindre un Nouveau Monde in 2008. Through the sales of our artwork and art projects, we continue to help create positive changes in communities locally, in Africa and Haiti.
