The Jewish myth of the Golem is an intriguing one. Fashioned out of clay, and life breathed into it by a mystical Rabbi, the Golem was said to protect the Jewish ghettoed community from outside dangers. In the wrong hands, however, the Golem could become destructive and turn on its masters. There are various versions of this myth, but it has equivalents in such tales as Frankenstein and earlier European myths and folk tales. My interest in the Golem is its similarity to the Freudian idea of the id - an amoral aspect of humanity that is both vital and potentially dangerous or threatening. Here the Golem appears to be either holding fire in its arms, or it is glowing from within, as if it is a furnace - full of heat, passion and power. I like to think of my image as presenting the Golem as both cuddly and potentially dangerous!

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society.
