"I started exploring this painting abstractly at the end of 2019; putting canvas on panels. joining panels together, building layers and layers of oil paint into a highly textured surface. I listen to the news on NPR during the day. By December the reports of China ravaged by the novel coronavirus, later Covid19, began to be more frequent. At some point in January it occurred to me to scrape away some of the paint I had layered and as I continued to work what seemed like a face began to emerge. I was reminded of the skull we had been asked to paint as students and so I proceeded to work in that direction. Looking back, I wouldn't say that this painting was about the global zoonotic pandemic of 2020, however as Ezra Pound said 'artists are the antenna of society.' The piece is custom framed and ready to hang.
