The Empress Wanrong led a tragic life. She became Empress through her dispirited and loveless marriage to the Emperor Puying. She starved to death and died alone in her jail cell in Yanji on June 20, 1946. Her place of burial is unknown. The story between has many twists and turns. I was drawn to her portrait. There was something in her that spoke of a depth and joy that sadly could never truly flourish.
