THE LAST SUPPER Scribe and illuminator unknown 13-014th centuries, Artsakh This scene presents Jesus' farewell talk with his disciples. Gathering them around the table on Maundy Thursday, Jesus blesses the bread, cuts it and puts it on the table, saying, "This is my body, take it and eat!" And he took the wine and when he had given thanks, he said unto them "This is my blood, drink it, because it will be poured for many unto remission of sins". During the supper, Jesus declares that one of his disciples will betray him and he gave them his last advice. "The Last Supper" is of great importance in Christian illustrations. This example of an Armenian miniature is the only one in the world. Here, Jesus sits with his disciples around the table, which symbolizes justice and fraternal equality. The table has a form of a sacramental bread - with the Armenian cross symbolizing eternity. This symbolizes the bread Jesus shared with his disciples. The bottom part depicts Judah, isolated from the rest. This too reflects the betrayal of Judah, which the Lord explains during the supper.
