About The Artwork

My own interest in painting ships, particularly sailing ships goes back many years and this original oil painting is one of several that I have painted of the Mayflower over the years. Arguably one of the most famous ships in American history and it is reckoned that 30 million people can trace their ancestry back to those settlers that landed near Cape Cod area in November 1620. The ship stayed for the first winter to provide accommodation. Having endured some extremely rough weather crossing the Atlantic Ocean that first winter turned out to be very harsh sadly with many lives being lost. The rest is history! The painting techniques vary from being very detailed on the ship to being quite loose, almost impressionistic on the sea, capturing the energy as the waves pound the small vessel. This original oil painting is supplied ready to hang in a superior hand finished frame, a carefully selected style to suit the painting. Exterior frame size 29 x 41 inches.

I have long been fascinated with painting water and nudes in water. I find the reflective properties, the movement and the distorting qualities of water provide me with a wealth of challenges. I find that although my aim is always to produce a high degree of realism in my paintings I am constantly using sequences of abstract shapes to achieve an effect. "Peter's work has been seen around the world. In his paintings reflections of both classical and modern interpretations can be found. With superb and interesting techniques he infuses a harmony between natural realism and the painted surface creating subtle yet dramatic imagery. Influences can be identified from many periods of art history. In particular the realism of the late nineteenth century and the photo-realism of the twentieth century."
