The Other Room 1 Painting

The ambiguity of our perception motivates me to create layered paintings and drawings, using both paint and image building techniques. This allows me to explore the formal qualities of a painting, as well as the relationship between different layers of the image. The shapes in my work arise intuitively from the behaviour of the paint itself or are strictly directed to appear realistic. I am intrigued by the relationship they create, as well as the relationship between the two-dimensional plane and the illusion of space. Often, one of the image layers consists of another material, such as an embroidered or flocked velvet-like layer. Through these additions, I create a layer that distinguishes itself from the others, adding a sense of enrichment or intensity to my canvases. My inspiration often comes from natural shapes. These forms, unburdened by meaning, give me the freedom to create images that I can imbue with their own painted meaning. ​The final painting is a departure from reality, touching on perception, feelings, and suggestion, without trying to tell a specific story.
