About The Artwork

The Pariah is an image made to represent the damage one does to oneself by following the ego’s teachings. From there, it is either knives in or knives out. The Pariah deals with the concept of shame. When shame is internalized, we feel guilty. The ego will have the individual believe in the possibility of our separation from heaven. "If I am not happy, I must have done something to deserve my misery. If other's judge me, I must be worthy of those judgements." These seem to me to be common phrases from the ego. Our own self-perceptions are reinforced when we perceive them to be shared with others. The Bhagavad-Gita, A Course in Miracles, and Zen Buddhism for example, all tell us that we are in heaven all the time, believing erroneously that the dream is real. The Hindus state unequivocally that this world is Maya, or an illusion. The painting I made for this topic uses atmosphere and mood to suggest the damage the ego has done, with the flame of hope upon the man's forehead, echoing the Buddha's urging," be a light unto thyself."

I resonate with imagery that offers a variety of personal interpretation. I am interested in the paradox of the ego in western rationalism in conjunction with the apparent elusiveness of salvation. Over the years I have become more trusting in intuition generally.
