About The Artwork

Myth can be more powerful than a rational explanation. After I was exposed to the Jungian perspective on the Unconscious mind, I had imagined an eventual marriage of the Conscious and Unconscious minds. Within the world of “The Rising”, the sky is filled with abstract forms. These forms were created by a method of instinctive mark making, calling upon my own Subconscious mind to guide my hand. After this first stage I embellished the seemingly random marks to appear purposeful. Below is the structure of man, made to represent our physical reality. Surrounding the structure is an ocean, which is a common Jungian archetype in dreams, representing the Collective Unconsciousness of humanity. Rising from the ocean is the mountainous water beast, the sign of impending doom, and the embodiment of divine fear. Atop the three tiers of the structure of Man stand beings in different stages of spiritual enlightenment. Those highest have ascended and have seemingly merged with the Unconscious. The center tier presents men whom has not yet ascended, but have seen the eye of God. On the lowest point are those who deny the Divine within themselves, those doomed to be consumed by the rising tide of the Collective Unconscious. This is my mythological vision of the future. This controlled chaos that fills the sky is brought down to the world of man in a time of need. For a great behemoth will rise from the Collective Unconscious of humanity, and the only salvation will lie in the union of the divided mind. Ultimately this all speaks to my internal mythology, my own Subconscious mind feeding me imagery from a lifetime of experience. In some way this is my own peculiar way of communicating my understanding of personally significant ideas, a vague contemplation of the impact of significant ideas on the world.
