The petals of a rose uncurl to set free the colours, forms and energy within. This large-scale oil painting is one of my 'Poetic Floral' series, and depicts a rose in bloom. I painted at a large scale to craft an intensity of experience for the viewer - the intoxicating joy that flowers can bring when we are lost in their colour and scent. With this piece I loved how the petals seem to reach out to the viewer as they bloom, almost escaping to freedom through the plane of the painting. The title is taken from words written by William Wordsworth that inspired me as I painted - "How does the Meadow flower its bloom unfold? Because the lovely little flower is free down to its root, and in that freedom bold."

I live and work in Ealing, London with my wife and daughter. My work is all about capturing moments from the world around us and returning the viewer to them with heightened emotion. It might be a moment that nature reveals a second of striking beauty, or when an expression perfectly describes a person. These moments that really resonate become enduring parts of us, bringing a wave of emotion whenever we recall them. My work seeks to hold them in the painted surface and through this enrich the viewer’s emotional experience of the world we live in. I take a figurative approach, using a broad colour palette to express the intensity of the experience I look to create. The collection I am currently developing takes floral forms as its route into this. Working at a large scale, I want to flood the viewer with the colours, shapes and textures that flowers possess to create a feeling of intoxication from them. And just as flowers’ forms are ever-changing, so I seek to explore the way that beauty changes over time. How this beauty is not restricted to the bloom of youth, but how it’s revealed in different ways as floral forms age, wilt and finally decay.
