My work is painterly, layered and abstract. I am inspired by Abstract Expressionism - particularly Mark Rothko’s thin, subtle dripping layers - inviting contemplation, introspection and to me, a sense of calm. My work often uses abstract, mark making techniques to explore the dreamlike feelings evoked by snapshots of landscapes’ magic hour and water reflections. Their dreamlike and abstract nature suggesting they may be from a parallel universe or my own subconscious. The title for my painting "To Be Still" took inspiration from the book "Untamed" by the wonderful Glennon Doyle. Within the book, Doyle emphasises the importance of listening to your inner knowing. "If I am willing to sit in the stillness with myself, I always know what to do..... the answers are never out there." Although I read the book a few years ago, her thoughts have stayed with me and, to me, are somehow echoed in the feel of this piece....
