ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Today for Tomorrow_Watercolor on Korean Traditional Paper_130cm*150cm_2019 I see the shadows cast by the unseen. There are things for which one’s yearning for their existence grows as their absence becomes more evident. The shadows of those which we long to see but are unseen walk with us every day. The irony that an unrealistic hope is both our dream and the very force driving our reality brings the furthest of our realities closest to our everyday lives. We want to grasp the sunset because we know the beautiful colors that paint the skies will change and quickly diminish. I paint my sentiments on things I cannot reach or things that change and vanish. In my paintings, the sun that shines far up in the sky sits closer to earth, and the never fading glow at sundown fills the image plane. Idealistic things that seem so large and distant, and things I wish will not fade away but stay by my side last and continue in the landscapes I paint. Hoping for or desiring something in the constant back and forth between reality and ideal transcends eras. The moon that an unknown person from the past had prayed to for a better tomorrow shines its light upon me today. I wish to send the message that stars never fade in paintings and share the comfort I get from painting stars that will shine forever on. I wish to see the unseen by painting the longest of shadows cast by what is farthest away.
