About The Artwork

I have embarked on a new series of works I'm calling The 100 Leaves Project. These works have been inspired by one leaf--a Tulip Poplar leaf. The Tulip Poplar is a majestic tree you'll find in the south. In the spring it puts out fabulous flours and its leaves are also striking in both size and shape. I decided to do a series of paintings using a photo of one leaf as the central feature, varying only the colors of the leaf and the background. This work has taken inspiration from one of the seminal painters of the 20th Century--Josef Albers who did a series of squares inside of squares inside of squares, thereby limiting the compositional possibilities and allowing him to focus on exploring the wonder of color and the unique ways that colors interact and affect us as we see them. While each of these paintings can stand on its own as a jewel of sorts, when grouped together with other paintings from the series they make for a stunning experience. Each piece is being offered with a limited edition of 100, and they are all signed and numbered.

I have been working as an artist and photographer since the 1970s. My early training was at The School of the Chicago Art Institute. In those days, I began exploring the layering of materials, most often oil pastels, on paper and using a range of tools to scrape away later layers to reveal earlier marks and compositions, many of which were abstract figurative. The beauty and variability of texture have continued to play a role in my painting and photography to this day. For the past ten years, I have been exploring the infinite varieties of texture and pattern represented in tree bark and lichen revealed through macro photography. More recently I have been experimenting with the marriage of photography with painterly compositions, once again layering images digitally one upon another, then partially erasing later layers to reveal either a design or photographic image that had been previously hidden. These multi-media compositions along with my photographic images of tree bark are now in a number of private collections, as are many of my earlier works on paper produced in the 80s and 90s. I am currently exploring painting on a photograph of a singular Tulip Poplar leaf in what I’m calling The 100 Leaves Project. I am maintaining the fundamental compositional structure and exploring the relationship of color, much in the vein of the color explorations of Josef Albers, a 20th Century artist. Each composition is distinct, creating different notes in a symphony of color. For many years I was represented by Albertson Peterson Gallery in Winter Park, FL, and have also shown with The Mark Fine Art Gallery in Stuart, FL at SNAP! Downtown in Orlando, FL, and most recently in several shows with the Women’s Caucus for Art Georgia.
