Twin Conversations Painting

Relying on the self-referential nature of painting, my works explore the psychological nature of memory. Each painting is put through a process of creating, disrupting, and reforming. The resulting effect is one of extending the compositions, and building a sense of time into the work. Memories, thoughts, and impressions are suggested by gesture, line, colour, and texture all woven into narrative tapestries which in turn form their own identities. My artistic practice is based on an archive of imagery taken from the sprawling mass of images flooding contemporary society. Source materials include newspapers, magazines, films, the Internet, and immediate surroundings. Images are intuitively chosen for their emotional or psychological impact. By combining seemingly disparate imagery I seek to assert the connections and a feeling of belonging to a unified whole. This allows me to understand my own fleeting moment in a natural world, as being part of the disintegration and reintegration of elementary matter. Dominant themes in my work include personal and public histories, passage of time, and the transience of memory. I am interested in perceptual tropes that we use to structure and buffer our experience of the world, and how memory is challenged by personal interpretations and the act of forgetting. As I paint, layers are built up--each layer at odds with the other while, at the same time, engaged in a dialogue. They hint at narratives yet obscure and limit information so that no definite conclusions can be drawn. Within the layers, the past, or the idea of remembered time, becomes substance, engaging and yet distancing the viewer from the original subject matter. Infused with ambiguity, the works operate in the areas between history and imagination, past and present, the intimate and the social, and the psychological and the corporeal.
