About The Artwork

Every now and then in a large tree nearby there's a tremendous twittering going on as a group of birds gathers for a big tweet. I've always liked the sound of it and happy party like atmosphere it generates. Earlier this year I did a piece of birds gathering on telephone lines, so this is a follow up on that. It often happens as a painting proceeds towards completion that I realise that it has a meaning for me deeper than the simple idea that inspired it, and that happened again here. The painting is quite shadowy at the bottom, quite sombre, with a solitary owl perched quietly on a low branch. The bare branches of the tree add to this mood, but as it rises towards the sky the feeling lightens, resolving in the freedom of the birds to take of into the sunlit clouds. I find a sense of joy in that freedom, and I came to realise that it embodies the idea of transcendence, a theme that occurs elsewhere in my work, unconsciously rising to the surface.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Art has been in my family for 3 generations, and in fact I still use the easel I inherited from my grandfather. As a child of around 5 my father bought my sister and I sketch pads and set up little still life arrangements for us to draw, so art is pretty much coded in. As an adult I was in the right time and place when CGI first came to SA in its most primitive early form (does anyone out there actually remember a 286 computer?!) and I rode that wave as it broke over the local broadcast and video scene, notching up some notable firsts and winning a pile of now forgotten awards. Eventually the forces of my life conspired to steer me to art proper, which is where you find me, now in my 11th year as a painter of pictures.
