I am foremost a colourist. My work reflects my inner world in colour, contrast, form, movement and composition. Images develop mainly by playing and experimenting, layer over layer, colours set against each other. Each colour influences the next; a little pink dot can suddenly change the whole image. Unexpected elements during the painting process enhance the joy in creating a piece of work. Kees van Dongen, a famous Dutch Fauvist from the 20th century said: “Painting is the most beautiful of lies”. I would say he is right: “I portray the world according to my imaginary vision. There is no accountability to what is wrong or right.’’ Though elements of the real world are present, like trees, clouds, landscapes, cityscapes and people, in the presentation I rely on what feels ‘right’ according to my eyes. The moods and feelings that my paintings bring about are far more important to me than references to existing objects in the real world.
