Unsure Painting

Cathy Dey (°1977, Newark, United States) makes paintings and media art. Dey often creates several practically identical works, upon which thoughts are developed and manifested. Her works don’t reference recognisable form. The painting surface is the physical existence that is cut and filled with subjective and intimate expression. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted, stimulating a memory of an emotion from a moment in reality. Her collected, altered works are being confronted as aesthetically resilient, thematically interrelated material for memory and projection. The possible seems true and the truth exists, but it has many faces, as Hanna Arendt cites from Franz Kafka. She creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer to relinquish any preconceptions. Her works are on one hand touchingly beautiful, on the other hand painfully attractive. Again and again, the artist leaves us orphaned with a mix of conflicting feelings and thoughts.
