This work is similar to the one before it and created with thick and richly pigmented oil paints and textile on canvas, ready to hang. The painting had a thin later of pinks and red in oil underneath. Once that dried I began applying blacks and graphite grey colors which finally I etched into to reveal my inspiration.

I was so absolutely moved by the recent Valentino show at Paris Fashion Week I turned right to the canvas to try to capture the emotions. The collection created by Pierpaolo Piccioli were so vibrant and so stunningly feminine and gorgeous. There was a fabulous contrast of colors and you could easily tell that there was some floral inspiration behind the collection, with each of these vivid gowns being named after their inspiration.

BIO | There is a strong narrative running through Susan Washington's work that references her long involvement with collage, textiles, fashion and art. She comes from a family of artists and by age 5 Susan was tutored in the art of origami and sumi ink drawing by her Japanese godmother as well as watercolors from her father. She spent her teens deconstructing dressmaking as a punk fashionista. Washington then landed on 5th Avenue working at Dior and Nautica. Gravitating to the oeuvres of Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly and Joan Mitchell, Washington has continued to push boundaries, re-inventing her work with each new piece while continuing to maintain the cohesive thread that creates her signature look. “Washington’s pieces are the perfect balance of artistry and execution. Jean Paul Gaultier, Yohji Yamamoto, Valentino and Vivienne Westwood may inspire the narrative but it is Washington’s deft palette of textiles, paper and oil that tells the story.” In addition to studio sales, Susan’s artwork is sold internationally. She is represented by Los Angeles Gallery, Artspace Warehouse and The White Room Gallery in the Hamptons, with limited works available at Holly Hunt’s NYC showroom. www.susanwashingtonfineart.com REPRESENTATION The White Room Gallery | Hamptons, NY Muriel Guepin Gallery | NYC Artspace Warehouse | Los Angeles, CA Online with Saatchi Art and limited selection of works at Holly Hunt NYC.
