Oil on wood panel with traditional The theme of this painting reflects the symbolic elements of 'Vanitas', a 17th century still life that featured a variety of objects representing the luxuries of life and the transient nature of all things. This type of composition was directly inspired by the biblical text Ecclesiastes, chapter 1 'Vanities of vanities'; the story of man's search for perpetual bliss becomes fleeting and short lived . Therefore, man must gravitate towards the spiritual and ponder the meaning of his life which is ultimately an enigma beyond human comprehension. The painting 'Vanitas' portrays the most common symbol of death, a scull along with others, the burning candle and the tipped glasses. The latter are not immediately visible, for they are meant to be hidden requiring the viewer to investigate the depths and nuances of the painted landscape. One will also find other hidden images as well with a prolonged gaze. The majority of the compositions combine representational with the non-representational. The abstract represents the world beyond our human visibility and the realistic represents the organic transient elements of this earthly plane.
