ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I KEEP MY CAMERA NEARBY AND USE PHOTOGRAPHY AS A STARTING POINT. OFTEN SPEND HOURS WORKING ON AN IMAGE, EXPERIMENTING WITH THE COMPOSITION. THE FIRST TWO OR THREE LAYERS OF A PAINTING ARE APPLIED WITH DILUTED OIL PAINT. ALTHOUGH I WORK IN OILS I USE MANY WATERCOLOUR TECHNIQUES IN MY WORK. AREAS OF THE BACKGROUND OFTEN INCLUDE DRIPS OF WHITE GESSO TO ADD TEXTURE. I DELIBERATELY LEAVE SOME AREAS HAZY AND TRY NOT TO OVERWORK THE BRUSHWORK. SO IT GIVES ROOM FOR THE INTERPRETATION IN THE VIEWER’S MIND

HOW DO YOU SEE THE ORDINARY? I love everyday moments that are ordinary at first glance and could pass by unnoticed. The canvas lets us both explore them closer as we each see them. Brushstrokes. Colours. Energy. When I paint, common scenes and familiar images suddenly transcend my usual perception of them and show me and each viewer something new. I try not to sway the audience in any direction. Each painting unlocks something for them. Maybe a new narrative or an old story or an archetype re-imagined. When that connection is made between a person and my piece, my work is complete.
