I work with metaphorical thought translated to imagery to reach beyond expectations of one viewpoint. This painting started on 3 separate canvas panels stapled to the wall but painted as if they were one. The starting point was a tree. The tree in this painting refers to growth, knowledge and connection. The 3 separate panels refer to life’s beginning, middle and end. In time, the tree reaches great heights and creates a labyrinth of spaces, of experiences, that are housed in one existence. The geometric shapes create ‘rooms’ that occupy the memories of those experiences. The 3 panels were then sewn onto black primed canvas. The sewing is a reference to my own connection to the earth and the fragility of life that hangs by a thread.

My art is forever in flux which only seems appropriate since time passes, life changes, and experiences are gained. But the one consistency that remains is my fascination of time and space and how we as humans fit into it. For me personally, this means that all trials and tribulations of past, present and future are explored and expressed in my art. Ultimately I am examining the relationship between my internal self and the external world. In doing so, I translate thought patterns into forms, colours, lines etc. I develop numerous preliminary works on paper in acrylics prior to approaching my larger canvases and applying oils. I tend to think in metaphors, so painting is the visual vehicle of my voice. Expressing my ideas in paint transcends boundaries of culture and verbal language. I believe the questions I ask of myself are also universal to all people. Although imagery is varied in my paintings, the mark making, forms and layers are consistent throughout my work. On each canvas, I build the layers and marks slowly, enhancing sections, negating others. I minimize or maximize the busy-ness of the composition to accentuate the intent of the work. The end result is a sense of mystery; of what was and what might be. -M.Miller 2024
