Volsupa (Wormshill) 2015, Oil over Canvas, copper, wood. 100 - 50 cm Wormshill, up on the North Downs (a place already rich in Myth) is haunted by the god its named after (woden, or Odin). The valley itself cuts through the chalk making feminine biomorphic shapes, taking the breath as one crests the hill. A mile from the village lies Black-post, where highway men were once hung and left to rot as a warning, maybe a tradition going back to when people were sacrificed to Woden. The valley running the other side of the village, Drake lane, maybe to do with Francis Drake, but I like to think connected to the Dragon that is meant to haunt this area. The title is from one of the main poems of Norse myth, where Odin wakes a Volva from the dead and asks her questions about the creation of the world and its fate. Painting the place its easy to feel how places like this would give rise to such myths. "Do you understand yet, or what more?" - Volsupa.
