Wave Dancers is a 28 x 28" (70 x 70cm) realist oil painting on canvas. A moment frozen in time, a crashing wave reveals the moving water droplets as little dancers. Christopher Witchall's painting continues the theme of ocean waves in his recent works. Capturing the light and movement of this timeless and ancient subject. "Even as a small boy, I have always loved watching the sea crash onto the shore. Its sense of power and energy and also its calming beauty and continuity with the beginning of time". These paintings are part photorealism, part abstract and part impressionist in appearance. Wave Dancers is painted in a slightly looser style than previous paintings, particularly in the top half, where the random highlights are applied thickly and with a palette knife, a technique he rarely deploys. Why the palette knife? "Although the technique takes me a little outside of my comfort zone, it's quite exciting to sometimes let the paint do the talking, instead of me trying to control everything." Christopher Witchall's unsentimental approach to his subjects combine traditional painting techniques with the realism and cool detachment of photography. Wave Dancers is painted on a deep edge canvas so doesn't require framing and is fitted ready to hang. It is signed on the bottom right and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

I am a British realist artist whose subjects include seascape, urban architecture and landscape, particularly the farmlands of the Cambridgeshire fens in east England, where I have lived, explored, painted and photographed of over 30 years. I studied Fine Art at York School of Art and Lancaster (Preston Polytechnic) in the 1970's and have continued to paint and regularly exhibit. After a long and happy career as an art gallery manager, curator and gallery owner I turned full-time professional artist in 2010. My work combines a love for traditional painting techniques with a fascination with the language and conventions of photography. My paintings reside in private collections throughout the UK, USA, Europe, Australia, Singapore and Japan.
