Wave Dancers Painting

Wave Dancers is a 28 x 28" (70 x 70cm) realist oil painting on canvas. A moment frozen in time, a crashing wave reveals the moving water droplets as little dancers. These paintings are part photorealism, part abstract and part impressionist in appearance. Wave Dancers is painted in a slightly looser style than previous paintings, particularly in the top half, where the random highlights are applied thickly and with a palette knife, a technique he rarely deploys. Why the palette knife? "Although the technique takes me a little outside of my comfort zone, it's quite exciting to sometimes let the paint do the talking, instead of me trying to control everything." Christopher Witchall's unsentimental approach to his subjects combine traditional painting techniques with the realism and cool detachment of photography.
