(Often emotion of which I'm not yet conscious.) Words are limiting. There is a need to know what you want to say before you say it. Images, particularly abstract images, don't impose the same limitations. I don't knit but I have to imagine knitting serves a similar purpose for those who do (the practical ends of knitting aside).
