About The Artwork
Yerevan is the first painting where I explore abstraction as image rescripting through memories. I was extremely homesick when I was making this piece. Work’s title references the name of my city in Armenia. Yerevan is about my childhood hometown but not the city where my family still lives. Going back I saw malls and shopping centers in spaces where majestic old town buildings were once standing. I’m frustrated to see my city being repeatedly robbed, stripped off its original ornaments and colors. One’s relationship with architecture is crucial in defining their behavior and habits, and I’m afraid that people back in Yerevan will soon forget who they are if such massive cultural destruction continues.
