ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Grandma takes a swim. A lovely candid scene from a Dutch beach before the onset of Covid-19. It felt like a different world.

I am an oil painter based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I have been painting for over 20 years. Over the years I have worked on a varied repertoire: plein air landscapes, portraits, pet portraits, sports. There is one common thread - I like to build in motion and disruption into my paintings: obscured edges, broken colour, ghosts, other elements of visual excitement that build abstraction over realism. The other thing is that I actively practice the Japanese art of notan, the linking of shadow forms, almost as an invisible layer to all of my works. I strongly believe in the healing power of art, both for the viewer and creator, and this informs my themes. Whether I like it or not, a film of emotion inevitably settles on everything I paint. Some of my clients claim they see a seductive puzzle in my paintings; others tell me they see longing and a touch of sadness. One of them told me they liked the "shouts not whispers" in my stroke play... I now think of that observation as something core to my style, a form of music.
