ABOUT THE ARTWORK
After returning from 2 years in Japan i made the "sore kara" series. The title is lifted from a Natsume Soseki novel of the same name which translates as "And Then", meaning what's next, what is the next phase. The influence of Japanese aesthetic is fully evident in this next phase of painting which was a complete break away from my earlier realistic work. The pieces are meditative and contemplative in nature for the viewer, drawing immediate visual attention yet letting the mind rest there. The sore kara works were done by applying layers of gouache, silver and gold leaf on a variety of papers with the addition of acrylic medium. In between layers are scrubbed and partially removed, sometimes to the degree of breaking though the paper which is patched with more paper.. It is framed in a shadow box frame revealing the entire piece. The paper dimensions are 40" x 30" and the frame measures 45" x 35". Although they are slightly different sizes this piece could be a companion piece to sore kara #16. They were made as a pair, but could be separated.
