(private collection Spain)size 7 feet x 3 feetBorn Hammersmith, London , FEB 18th 1950 Self-taught outsider artist mainly in oil .Producing work that resembles some admired master whilst keeping one eye on whether a work will sell or please a particular society or client is not being an artist. A true artist cannot be just a "fan" of art but must embrace being totally possessed by the absolute joy of it. ILLUSIONISM. I work to create a convincing or even deceptive sensation of real space and form on a two dimensional surface. shapes, lines, forms, colours ,created for their own sake, have aesthetic value in their own right. My work always starts with tentative scribblings from which the artistic manifestation struggles into existence.My Knowledge of the history of art gives me clear focus and confidence that work created has merit and is "of its time". It's to easy to slip into the rut of repetition and retro/pastiche.David Vango's paintings are of the highest standard and embody a sense of free spirit which emanates from his compositions, one feels that he has experimented with both the intellectual origination and media and that we are now looking at the finished and highly defined work. I have often thought that the abstract artists of the 20th century have a lot to answer for as well as imeasurably enritching our visual heritage one suspects that they opened the door to many lesser artists,who found it acceptable to take a short cut into this means of expression without the ground-work of sound drawing and technique,or an understanding of what abstract art is all about.This is far from the case with David Vango,a self- taught artist.
