This artwork was part of a project for an end of year degree show. The project was based around the time of childhood, a time when we are learning and gathering the information around us. Our childhood events are stored into the subconscious or unconscious mind. In a physical sense we store objects, memorabilia etc away into boxes. This significant part of my life lead me on a personal exploration through family photo’s. Through observing how we mentally construct the world around us, this painting consists of architectural structures which portray aspects of the psyche. The conscious mind being our reality, what makes sense to us, and the unconscious mind consisting of fragments of reality which are stored away, this area is illogical and nonsensical. This painting is painted in a way which reflects this idea. In some areas the paint is moulded in a precise, restricted manner and in other areas the paint is applied in a loose manner with runs and drips to suggest a sense of fluidity, the constant state of flux in which our minds exist.

A resident of Co. Waterford, I have recently completed an honours degree in visual arts in Waterford Institute of Technology. I have had an interest in the tradition of painting from an early age and like to paint in oils, acrylic or watercolours. Having completed a graphic design course in 2001, much of my work is influenced by so called "˜new media' such as photography, film, video and internet images. The images which I create deal with the world of appearances in particular the human figure. By using ready made images as my inspiration and through much manipulation of materials, my paintings result in an exploration of human form. My use of paint can be disciplined in some areas and loose in other areas. This contrast of freedom and restriction makes a painting interesting to me.
