Part of the survival mechanism of humans is the attempt to control our surroundings, including the natural world. We stand both in nature, as we are natural beings that come from nature, and outside of nature, as we can act upon and influence nature from a cultural position. Through technological inventions and the development of various virtual realities, we are becoming more and more removed from the real world and our natural origin. Through this work I am trying to reconnect and explore my relationship with nature. I am looking at the unclear boundaries and the power balance between myself, both as a cultural and a natural being, and nature. The project is a response to my anxiety and worries related to what the future holds for us. I feel humanity is off track and increasingly out of touch with our own nature and survival and that the destructive powers of the human condition now seem to be coming back to haunt us in various ways; through irreversible climate change, global pandemics and global conflicts. The work is created through carefully staging scenes in nature, juxtaposing the natural surroundings with props and elements from my life outside of nature. The locations chosen for my photographs are carefully selected landmarks, places that have caught my attention as I have made my way through the land in my local area in Norway, both as a child and now as an adult.

Through exploring the relationship between our inner world and the physical body Maria's work represent a visual discourse on the contemporary female condition. With particular interest in the domestic sphere she allows the absurd to collide with the mundane and pairs humor with poignancy to investigate notions of self, identity and our emotional backyard. The uncertain nature of the boundaries between mind and body, individual and social and private and public, past and present comes alive in Maria's work.
