This project began as an investigation into the medieval history of Europe and the Peace of Westphalia, which marked the beginning of modern nationhood. It has since evolved into a broader exploration of the pre-Christian and even prehistoric human desire to exert sovereignty, establish boundaries, and impose order upon the natural world. This work delves into the roots of our modern system of national identities and examines the concept of dominion as the creation of habitable order out of chaos. It seeks to uncover the ancient origins of these ideas and to understand the human ambition to rule the kingdoms of sea and sky, to tame the wild, and to organise and defend territory. Ultimately, this series aims to represent the seminal aspiration towards dominion that has existed for centuries. --- C-Type colour print on Fujicolor Crystal Archive Matte. With a profound fascination for the intricacies of memory, psychology, and metaphysics, Jaz Kilmister's photographs stand as visual portals into psychological spaces that are both hauntingly familiar and tantalisingly elusive. It is within this enigmatic realm that Kilmister deftly captures the essence of a surreal dream-space. A distinguishing feature of Kilmister's artistic practice is his meticulous fusion of darkroom-exposed mixed media, collage, sculpture, and digital composite techniques. Through this alchemical blending of diverse media, he constructs visual narratives that transcend traditional boundaries, blurring the lines between conceptual and representational photography. Methodology intertwines with intuition, resulting in captivating imagery that challenges the limitations of the photographic medium. With an insatiable curiosity and a relentless pursuit of the evocative power of the photograph, he embarks on an artistic journey that subverts the confines of the visible. Through his lens, Kilmister seeks to unravel the mysteries of our existence, inviting viewers to embrace a sense of wonder and embark on a transformative exploration of the unknown.
