Born in London, 1950. Moved to New York in 1955, then Los Angeles in 1968, where I now live.Poured in Place: Every Bridge Over the Los Angeles RiverThe 501 Freeway carries thousands of vehicles east and west, their drivers perhaps barely aware of the cement-lined gouge with the trickle of water running through the middle of it known as the Los Angeles River. The river and the freeway connect communities and divide them. They also help define them. The 501 is a recent addition to the freeway system, completed in 1993. The curved causeway conveys westbound traffic toward the northbound 710. From below, the sound of rushing traffic is constant. Despite the noise the riverbed is calm, a calm broken only by the occasional cyclist riding through, while in the distance firefighters run their trucks through a course demarcated by bright orange cones. What appears to be rain turns out to be fine dust dislodged by the cars and trucks overhead. This photograph is one of hundreds taken during 2005 of all 72 street bridges, freeway bridges, railway bridges, footbridges and pipelines that cross the Los Angeles River between Riverside Drive at the edge of Griffith Park and Queens Way at the Port of Los Angeles in Long Beach.
