Seaweed is future friendly material, and although its use traditionally has been focused on the immediate needs, like feeding domestic animals, its part in the greater ecosystem is increasingly recognized. With the flood and ebb tides of the sea, this alga takes part in life both above and below water level, thriving on drying up in the sun and soaking in saltwater at flood tide. To create the costume (and to keep it at the shoot), the designer had to find the optimum degree of dryness, where it was not too slippery, and not too dry. I read a message about daring the extremes and still finding the balance here. Printed with pigment ink (Epson) by the photographer on 100% cotton paper (Hahnemühle photo rag baryta) Ascophyllum nodosum II is one of twelve pictures in the series "From the eyes he made window panes". The combination of pigment and cotton should in itself be one of the most durable media, but the surface has not been treated further, and should be kept behind UV protection for optimal longevity. "From the eyes he made window panes" are twelve photographic profile portraits in a style inspired by the renaissance in their posing and styling, with a more dramatic lighting designed to accentuate the materials used in the costumes. The costumes are designed from surprising, non-textile materials, posing questions of use and re-use, our relationship with the world we live in and not the least the practise of costume making. Being created for the very particular stage of the camera in a studio, they are very much an exploration at the edge of what's possible to use as clothes and the potential for storytelling the characteristics of such a stage lends to the visual language.

Norway
Finding great pleasure in the presence of the real, I try to make visual mediations that will help both myself and viewers of my art to appreciate the world we share. I live in Norway, where dark, fierce winters and luminous summer nights spans an arch over the lives of humankind in a special way. I grew up at the coast where fishermen crossed the treshold of "man's element" into the wet and fertile ocean. I currently live in one of Norway's most fertile agricultural lands: these are the terms of our existance: to sweat between dusk and dust.
