Black Thunder (FR) is a retired National Hunt racehorse. He was photographed at his training yard in Somerset, England in September 2012, and the background elements captured in spring/summer 2013 with the final piece being completed in August that year.

The picture is a composite of many images (see; method on website).

The work was subtly revised in late 2018.



The portrait was first exhibited at The Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket (UK) in July 2014. A solo exhibition entitled 'Ripley - The July Week Exhibition'. It was presented at The London Art Fair in January 2015 and exhibited at The Munnings Art Museum in October 2017 where Ripley was invited as the speaker for the inaugural Munnings Birthday Lecture.

British photographic artist Ripley creates artworks using high-resolution medium-format photography in combination with extensive work in post-production. Ripley recently completed a series of twelve large-scale pieces of The Household Cavalry, the pictures, which took several years to create, portray officers and soldiers from The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals mounted on their horses and posed on buildings throughout London. A boxed-set of the portraits was the official Coronation Present from The Household Cavalry to His Majesty King Charles III, this was presented by Ripley and senior officers from The Household Cavalry to King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on the 15th of June 2023 Throughout 2023 to 2024 the work has been exhibited at prestigious venues which include historical buildings, art galleries and museums, The solo shows have included; Blenheim Palace, Royal Ascot, The NHRM, Arundel Castle, Floors Castle and Grimsthorpe, OSG Gallery and in 2025 The Chelsea Arts Club.
