The Bronte Pool work began like Wayne's other series; one photograph resonated enough for him to embark on a long-term project. That first photograph of the ocean pool was captured on a stormy winter evening in 2008. The melancholy image appealed because it was more than a picture that simply documented a place. It was the inspiration to further explore the subtle beauty, drama, colour and emotion associated with the coming together of various elements found at the pool: the light at dusk, the calm water of the pool, the movement of the unpredictable sea, the graphic patterns of the swimming lanes, the contrasting textures of cement, sandstone, timber and chrome, the subtle reflections off the water and the perceived lonesomeness of solitary swimmers.

WAYNE FOGDEN is a Sydney based artist. His focus since the early 2000’s has been long term photographic projects with specific narratives. A minimalist at heart he uses just one camera and a single lens to make stunning, large-scale images using whatever light is available, and adheres to the great photographer, Ansel Adam’s philosophy, “A good photograph is knowing where to stand”. Aesthetically, his photographs triumph space and scale, with compositions that consider what information is excluded from the frame as carefully as what is included. His ongoing projects include Farmland, framing the countryside as a place of open spaces, isolation and nostalgia, as well as the long-term documentation of Italian interiors, treating the most iconic, beautifully extravagant palazzi and the lesser known, private villas with equal gravitas. Fogden has lived between Sydney and Melbourne, and initially worked as a commercial photographer primarily in editorial and advertising. He specialized in portraiture, fashion and travel. As a commissioned photographer Wayne produced imagery for the likes of American Express, The Australian Financial Review, Wish Magazine, FHM UK, FHM Lithuania, Inside Sport, AMP, Kayser, Bonds, Hanes and Spring Court. Over the past 20 years he has had portfolios of his personal work published by The Ink Group and in such magazines as Qantas' The Australian Way, Australian Traveller and Noise.
